In this project we updated a semi-finished open area basement into three designated spaces, a laundry/mud room, a storage room, and a TV. room. Functionality, aesthetics, and cost effectiveness were top priorities.
The main and largest space of this design was the laundry/mud room. Cabinets were installed, including a customer pedestal for the front loading washer and dryer, a sink was added and recessed lighting throughout. Being that it was a basement with no source of natural light, lighting was very important. The general lighting needed to be bright as this is a functional work space so we used low profile recessed LED downlights. The flooring was a luxury vinyl plank in a light warm grey, bright white smooth faced cabinets from IKEA, door and trim were also painted in a bright white.
We went with “Smoke”, a beautiful soft medium grey/blue by Benjamin Moore for the walls and matt black hardware.
To create a space for shoes and coats, we chose two complementary pieces of furniture rather than a custom built in to save some money. Thinking out of the box, we used a white TV bench from IKEA and a wall mounted hall tree to create lots of storage for coats, shoes, and outerwear accessories. We used a barn door to close off the storage room for its character and to save the space of a door swing.
